Google Doodle celebrates Balamani Amma's 113th birthday.

Google on July 19, 2022, is celebrating the acclaimed Indian poet Balamani Amma on her 113th  birth anniversary with a special doodle dedicated to her.  

Balamani Amma is the 'amma' and'muthassi' of Malayalam poetry. Balamani Amma won the Padma Bhushan in 1987, Sahitya Akademi in 1965, and Saraswati Samman in 1995.

Google Doodle featured Banamani Amma seated between books and writing in a white saree. Balamani Amma influenced Malayalam poets. The Kochi International Book Fair offers a Balamani Amma Award in her honour.

Balamani Amma never received any formal training or education and was homeschooled by her uncle Nalappat Narayan Menon, a prominent Malayali poet. Balamani Amma married V.M. Nair, the Managing Director of Mathrubhumi, at age 19.

Balamani Amma, age 21, authored 'Kooppukai' in 1930. The monarch of Cochin, Parikshith Thampuran, initially recognised her as a great poet and granted her the Sahithya Nipuna Puraskaram.

As a reader of Indian Mythology, her poetry reinterprets women's roles. Balamani Amma's early writings celebrated motherhood, earning her the title "motherhood poetess."
